Rob Szatkowski se narodil 18. prosince 1970 v Battle Creek ve státě Michigan. Nejprve se věnoval, stejně jako většina jiných wrestlerů, jinému sportu, a sice vzpírání a kickboxu. Obě tyto disciplíny mu daly perfektní základ pro budoucí wrestlingovou kariéru. Navíc byl jeho prvním trenérem legendární Sheik. Během roku 1990, kdy v ringu debutoval, absolvoval Rob množství zápasů, které vyvrcholily jeho 2. místem v Kalamazoo Heavyweight Toughman Contest. V 90. letech pak zápasil na indy scéně pod svým vlastním jménem. Během spolupráce s USWA byl jeho prvním soupeřem budoucí tag teamový partner Sabu. Sabu také, jako Sheikův synovec, hrál důležitou roli při Robově tréninku. Za svého působení na indy scéně zápasil krátce i v SAPW (South Atlantic Pro Wrestling), kde měl feud s Rikki Nelsonem o Light Heavyweight Title. V této době se Rob seznámil s Ronem Slinkerem a byl to právě on, kdo navrhl přezdívku Rob Van Dam. Styl zápasení shodný s filmovou hvězdou Jean Claude Van Dammem a také jistá podoba mu brzy získaly množství fanoušků. Rob se stal televizním šampionem IWF.
V roce 1992 přišel Rob do WCW, kde byl rychle znám jako Robbie V. Zaznamenal zde několik vítězství, ale po roce tuto společnost opustil. Počátkem roku 1993 přesídlil do Japonska. V All Japan Pro Wrestling byl v týmu s Johnny Smithem a Bobby Duncumem Jr. V Japonsku byl Rob brzy velmi populární, stejně jako ve Státech. Byl zde ovšem klasifikován jako borec střední váhy a přesto míval zápasy většinou proti soupeřům váhy těžké. Z toho důvodu neměl možnost zazářit tak, jak jeho schopnosti dovolovaly. Rok 1995 byl v Robově kariéře dost zajímavý. Všechno začalo v Las Vegas, kde zápasil pro NWC. Rob zde spolu s Bobby Bradleym vytvořil tým, známý jako „Aerial Assault“ a získali Tag Team Titles. Jejich zakončovací chvat, známý jako Suicide Bomber, byl perfektní a měl u diváků velký úspěch. Ale tento rok byl pro Roba významný především tím, že ho oslovil režisér a producent Keith Strandber a tak začala jeho filmová dráha. Rob hrál ve filmu Superfights, druhou roli dostal ve snímku Blood Moon a další ve filmu Black Mask 2. Bylo možné ho také vidět v City Guys, The X-Files, TNN, VIP, SPY TV a 18 Wheels of Justice.
V roce 1996, přesně 5. ledna debutoval Rob v ECW ve Filadelfii. Rob upoutal příznivce ECW bojovnou obratností, chvaty sršícími energií, jako je Van Daminator, Van Terminator a Frog Splash. Hned v prvním zápase porazil Axla Rottena. Jeho první skutečný feud ovšem vypuknul v dubnu a jeho soupeřem nebyl nikdo jiný než Sabu. Připomenu další významné souboje, např. s Tommy Dreamerem a Bam Bam Bigelowem. Toho Rob porazil v dubnu 1998 a získal tak ECW World TV Title. Držel ho pak neskutečných 23 měsíců. Spolu se svým týmovým partnerem Sabu získali také ECW Tag Team Titles, když porazili Lance Storma a Chrise Candida. Poslední Robův zápas v ECW byl jeho souboj s Jerry Lynnem a uskutečnil se při PPV v roce 2001.
Následující Robovy kroky směřovaly do WWF. 9. července 2001 spolu s dalšími devíti členy ECW (Tazz, Tommy Dreamer, Dudley´s) napadli členy WWF. ECW a WCW se potom spojila proti WWF ve feudu nazvaném Invaze. V tomtéž roce podepsal RVD smlouvu s WWF a věrný své přezdívce Mr.PPV, porazil právě při této akci Jeffa Hardyho a získal svůj první Hardcore Title v této Federaci. Nazývejme Roba jak chceme -Mr. Monday Night nebo Mr. Pay-Per-View, ale jedno je jisté, je to borec, který má obrovský talent, spoustu fanoušků a mnoho obdivovatelek v dámské části publika. Je energický, úspěšný a drzý. Přesto, že jeho vysoké kopy jsou mnohdy velmi nebezpečné a způsobil jimi mnoho zranění, která si vyžádala někdy i hodně stehů, vedení Federace mu je zatím nezakázalo, i když o tom uvažovalo.
V roce 2002 získal dvakrát Intercontinental Title a také European Title. Byl dokonce i 1.Contender pro World Heavyweight Title. V následujícím roce se s ním pomalu začalo dít to, co s mnoha jinými talentovanými borci. Vedení WWE ho pozvolna tlačilo do ústraní, žádné zajímavé zápasy, žádné zajímavé feudy. Robovi končila smlouva v létě 2004. Již od počátku toho roku vystupoval vůči vedení velmi kriticky a poskytl mnoho rozhovorů na téma zákulisní politiky WWE. Fanoušci s napětím očekávali, jestli bude jeho smlouva prodloužena nebo podepíše úplně novou za jiných podmínek. Stalo se a Rob ve WWE nadále zůstal.
